IPL 2027 opening match date, venue and teams, what we know
IPL 2027 opening match date, venue and teams are not yet announced. What BCCI has said, the likely March window, who usually plays the opener and key dates.
The IPL 2027 opening match has not been announced yet. The BCCI has not released the schedule for the 20th season of the Indian Premier League, so the date, venue and teams for the first match are still unconfirmed. Any site that gives you a fixed opening fixture today is guessing.
What we do know is enough to narrow it down. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has said the board wants the 2027 season to start as early as 10 March and end by 15 May, earlier than usual. The player auction is set for Goa in December 2026. And recent seasons suggest the opener is likely to be played at the home of the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
This page gathers what has been said on the record and will be updated as soon as the BCCI announces the schedule. For the whole season, including all 10 teams, home grounds, match timings and key dates, see our IPL 2027 schedule page.

When will IPL 2027 start?
The IPL usually runs from the last week of March to the end of May. For 2027, the BCCI wants to move it earlier.
"From next season, IPL could start as early as March 10 and finish by May 15 to avoid adverse weather conditions," Saikia told ANI in June, NewsX reported. He told PTI that hot weather is "not very conducive" for players or crowds, and that rain or pre-monsoon weather after mid-May could affect the playoffs and final, Sunday Guardian reported. He said he had asked the BCCI's games development team to look for suitable windows.
There are limits on how early the season can start. The Sunday Guardian report noted that India's home Test series against Australia, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, needs to finish first, and that international fixtures elsewhere in March may delay the arrival of some overseas players.
Other reports, including one carried by Yahoo Sports, put the 2027 window at 14 March to 30 May, but say the dates are unconfirmed. Until the BCCI publishes the schedule, the safest answer is: IPL 2027 is expected to start in March 2027.
Who will play the IPL 2027 opening match?
The BCCI has not named the teams. But there is a clear pattern. In each of the last four seasons, the defending champions opened the tournament at home:
| Season | Opening match | Venue | Defending champions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings | Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad | Gujarat Titans |
| 2024 | Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru | MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai | Chennai Super Kings |
| 2025 | Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru | Eden Gardens, Kolkata | Kolkata Knight Riders |
| 2026 | Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Sunrisers Hyderabad | M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru | Royal Challengers Bengaluru |
The 2026 opener was played on 28 March 2026 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, with RCB beginning their title defence at home under captain Rajat Patidar, All India Radio and Gulf News reported.
RCB then won the 2026 final, beating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in Ahmedabad on 31 May to win back-to-back titles, according to The Statesman and other reports. That makes them the defending champions for 2027, and the most likely team to play the first match, at home in Bengaluru.
The opponent is impossible to predict. In recent seasons the BCCI has often chosen a high-profile match for the opener, such as the 2026 runners-up or a big rival, but there is no fixed rule.
Will there be an IPL 2027 opening ceremony?
Not yet known. In 2026, the BCCI cancelled the traditional opening ceremony as a mark of respect for the 11 fans who died in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB's title celebrations in June 2025, All India Radio reported. Eleven seats were kept vacant through the season in their memory.
Whether the ceremony returns for the 20th season, a milestone the league may want to mark, has not been announced.

Saikia has confirmed that the auction will be held in Goa in December, ESPN reported. The 16 December date comes from an internal BCCI message to the 10 franchises, reported by Cricbuzz and others, but has not been formally announced. It would be the first IPL auction in Goa and the first in India in several years, Yahoo Sports reported. Read how it works: How the IPL auction works.
IPL 2027 auction and teams
IPL 2027 is a mini-auction year. Teams keep most of their squads and buy players to fill gaps. According to reports:
- Teams must submit retention lists by 15 November.
- Each squad can have a maximum of 25 players, including no more than eight overseas players.
- Right to Match cards are not used in a mini-auction.
- The total salary cap for 2027 is reported to be ₹157 crore per team, Yahoo Sports reported.
The 10 teams are expected to be the same as in 2026: Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
How to watch the IPL 2027 opening match
Broadcast arrangements for 2027 will be confirmed closer to the season. In recent seasons, the IPL has been shown on TV by the official broadcaster and streamed on its partner platform in India. We will add confirmed broadcast and streaming details when the schedule is announced.
Why the IPL 2027 schedule matters
- 20th season: The IPL began in 2008, so 2027 marks two decades of the league.
- An earlier window: If the season moves to March to mid-May, it changes plans for players, broadcasters and fans who travel to matches, and avoids the worst of the summer heat and pre-monsoon rain.
- World Cup year: The 2027 ODI World Cup is due later in the year, so some countries may manage their players' workloads, and a few overseas stars could miss part or all of the season, Sunday Guardian reported.

Beware of fake schedules
Many websites already list an "official" IPL 2027 schedule, a fixed opening match or a downloadable PDF. These are not from the BCCI. The only official sources are the BCCI and the IPL's own website and social media accounts. National Diaries will update this page as soon as the official schedule is released.
The opening match of the 20th IPL is still a few months and one auction away. When the BCCI confirms the date and venue, we will update this page straight away.
